Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Graduate Fellowships

Summer 2008 and Academic Year 2008-09

Graduate fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education to assist graduate students in acquiring foreign language and either area or international studies competencies. The languages supported by FLAS (Title VI) at the UW-Madison in 2008-2009, contingent on federal funding, are (check area studies programs for languages not listed):

  • African Studies Program: Arabic, Akan/Twi, Swahili, Xhosa, Yoruba
  • East Asian Studies: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan (related to East Asian studies only), Uighur
  • European Studies: Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic,  Italian, Norwegian, Swedish
  • Global Studies: Arabic (outside Africa; please contact African Studies for Arabic within Africa); advanced Chinese; Indonesian; Persian; Turkish (outside Central Asia and the Balkans, please contact CREECA for Turkish in those areas); French and Spanish (for professional school students only)
  • Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies: Portuguese, Quichua, Yucatec Maya
  • Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia, Center for: Azeri, Bashkir, Bulgarian, Chuvash, Czech, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Persian (related to Afghanistan and Central Asia only), Polish, Romanian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Tajik, Tatar, Turkmen, Tuvan, Uzbek, Yakut
  • South Asia, Center for: Hindi, Persian (related to Afghanistan and Pakistan only), Telugu, Tibetan (related to South Asian studies only), Urdu. Summer: Malayalam, Sinhala, and Punjabi
  • Southeast Asian Studies, Center for: Indonesian, Malaysian, Filipino (Tagalog), Thai, Vietnamese

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Applications by students in professional fields are encouraged. Preference will be given to applicants with a high level of academic ability and with previous language training.

Academic Year Fellows must be admitted to or enrolled in graduate or professional programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Academic Year Fellows receiving these awards must take one language course and one related area or international studies course each semester.

FLAS fellowships for intensive summer language study are available in all areas. A separate application is required for summer fellowships, and is available from the appropriate FLAS program’s web site. In some cases Summer FLAS fellowships may be used for study on other campuses.
