As part of an exchange agreement, the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms University at Bonn will offer one 2011-12 academic year award and several short term awards to University of Wisconsin-Madison advanced graduate students who wish to follow an independent research program under the guidance of a senior faculty member.
Applicants should be enrolled in a University of Wisconsin-Madison doctoral program. Preference will be given to dissertators; however, graduate students who have not yet passed preliminary examinations for the Ph.D. will be considered. The awards are not tenable for use after a terminal Master’s Degree.
Academic year award: The academic year award pays fees at Bonn and provides a maintenance allowance of approximately 7,500 Euro for the year (based on last year’s stipend) for a PhD student; 6,500 Euro for a MA student. The fee waiver covers registration, examinations and tuition at Bonn. Recipients who are dissertators will enroll through IAP in a study abroad course to maintain enrollment and provide health insurance required by the Board of Regents. The maintenance allowance may need to be supplemented by personal funds to cover the expenses of travel, accommodations, meals, books and incidentals.
Short term awards: There are several short term awards available (duration could be one or two months, or one semester, depending on the needs of the project). Dissertators are preferred; however, graduate students who have not yet passed preliminary examinations for the Ph.D. will be considered. The awards are not tenable for use after a terminal Master’s Degree. The awards pay fees at Bonn and provide a maintenance allowance of approximately 750 Euro per month for a PhD level candidate, or 650 Euro per month for an MA level candidate. The fee waiver covers registration, examinations and tuition at Bonn. Recipients who are dissertators will enroll through IAP in a study abroad course to maintain enrollment and provide health insurance required by the Board of Regents. If a dissertator is pursuing research during the summer months and was enrolled in the preceding semester, they do not need to enroll for the summer semester. The maintenance allowance may need to be supplemented by personal funds to cover the expenses of travel, accommodations, meals, books and incidentals. The application proposal for a short term award should specify the amount of time requested for the project and include a justification of the request.
Applications for the two types of award are separate and should be clearly identified as either for an academic year award or a short term award. A complete application for either type of award consists of: a two-page summary statement describing the research to be pursued at Bonn; an up to date curriculum vitae; a letter of support from the major advisor endorsing the candidacy, plus one other letter of support; undergraduate and graduate transcripts (these can be copies of official transcripts as long as they are clearly legible. The UW-Madison Student Record is not the official transcript). These documents must be submitted together; do not have items sent separately. Candidates accepted for the Bonn exchange award will need to provide a copy of their high school diploma to Bonn (it is possible to waive this for the short term awards).
The extended application deadline for the academic year and short term awards is Thursday, April 7, 2011 by 12:00 PM. Complete applications should be submitted to Dr. Erin Crawley, 328 Ingraham Hall, 1155 Observatory Dr., Madison, WI 53706. Please contact Erin with any questions you have about the competition.
