Centrex SystemThe university uses the Centrex telephone service system. DoIT is the agent administering the system. The Centrex system is not unique to UW-Madison. State and local government offices are also part of this system. A complete set of directions for using Centrex lines, the State Telephone System (STS), and International calling may be found on DoIT’s website. Internal Phone and ServicesSome of the non-pay telephones that you find on campus are restricted to campus only. Others are limited to Madison area only. If you try unsuccessfully to make a call dial Network Operations, at 2-5544, to find out if the phone you are calling from is restricted. Local CallsTo place local, non-Centrex calls, dial 9, then all seven digits. Long DistanceDial 8+1+area code+7-digit number. The STS system is used to call all 50 states. The II is charged for all long distance calls over 30 seconds long whether your call connected to your intended party or not. If you receive a very rapid busy signal it means that all circuits are busy. Hang up and try later. When possible try to call before 10 a.m or after 2.p.m. to avoid the peak hours. For unresolved problems, call 1-800-HELP-STS for assistance 24 hours per day. International Long DistanceUsing STS for international calls ensures the lowest possible charges. To access STS international, dial 8 + 011 + country code+ city code + local number. Pressing the # key on a touchtone telephone after dialing will speed your call. Country and city codes are located in the front of the Madison/Dane County telephone directory. Toll-free CallsDial 9+ 1+ 800 (or 888 or 877)+ the 7-digit number. Do not dial 8+1…… or you will be charged for the duration of the call. Calling Cards and Credit Card CallsTelephone cards may be obtained for people who make many long distance calls while traveling on university business. Directory Assistance or InformationContact the long distance (ATT) operator by dialing 9+0+0 |
